This book presents a review and analysis of specific questions about education as it relates to black children. Part I contains the methodology, literature review, program narratives, and principles and summary activities charts of the Model Black Child Development Program Description Project. The program narrative section contains ten descriptive narratives of selected black child development program models. Each narrative addresses the: (1) ideology, (2) organizational structure, (3) theoretical basis, (4) teaching strategy and (5) curriculum content of the program and includes a detailed sample of learning activities observed during the site visit. The section on the principles and summary activities charts presents a summary of the learning tasks which consistently appeared in the curricula of the programs and ten principles which are drawn exclusively from an analysis of the data obtained. Part II presents materials related to the historical perspective of the status of black child development programming. The first section contains a comparative analysis of 13 independent black institutions in which the depth and breadth of curricula are explored. The final section examines research on: (1) self-concept development, (2) physiological development, (3) congitive development, (4) social-psychological implications of labeling and (5) cross cultural testing.
