The Role of the Public Libraries in Adult Independent Learning. Part II. Final Report.
Mavor, Anne S.; And Others
Part two of the final report on the adult independent learning program focuses on the following: (1) discussion of the 11 data collection categories developed to meet the information needs of specific groups--advisors working with adult learners, planners monitoring service performance, library policy decision makers responsible for determining the future of the service, and other libraries interested in implementing similar services; (2) aggregated data analysis of the 11 categories of information collected by the participating libraries between July 1975 and July 1976; (3) policy questions and issues raised as a result of the interpretation of the data analysis; (4) short and long range dissemination activities; and (5) conclusions. The program served 934 learners in this time period; 216 of them were light or new project library users. The results of the evaluation made by the learners completing the program indicated that 91 percent were satisfied with the service and that 92 percent would use the service again for a new learning project. Other outcomes were (1) the successful integration of the service with program planning and management; (2) formation of the Consortium of Public Library Innovation; (3) identification of the conditions which must be met for the learners advisory service to succeed; and (4) identification of background and training requirements associated with the design, modeling, and implementation of a new service concept. Descriptions of the advisory and information support services, as well as data collection forms and recording instructions, are appended. (Author/JPF)
