The single but substantial economic dimension of Georgia State University's contribution to the Atlanta metropolitan area is examined in this research report. The purpose of the study was to identify successful estimating techniques developed by previous studies of the local spending impact of postsecondary educational institutions. Three direct spending sources associated with Georgia State are considered: (1) the direct purchase of goods and services needed for the university's day-to-day operations; (2) the spending patterns of the faculty and administrative staff; and (3) the spending patterns of the student body. Since the university's total economic impact on the city is some multiple of its initial, direct channels of spending, this study also establishes a standard method of computing the multiplier value so that the university's total spending impact may be estimated on a timely basis at future dates.
