Sticks and Stones: The Story of Loving a Child.
Pieper, Elizabeth
The mother of a child with spina bifida recounts her difficulties in trying to obtain services for her disabled son. She touches on such topics as her feelings on being told her infant was disabled, treatment by medical personnel, reactions of family and friends, home therapy with the Doman Delacato patterning program, testing and evaluation, problems in enrolling her child in school, impressions of a state institution, efforts in fund raising, and organizations dealing with the disabled and their parents. Vignettes illustrate the way society discriminates against the disabled and the need for parents to take the role of child advocate. (SBH)
