The methodologies, instruments, and procedures that were used by Research Triangle Institute (RTI) in conducting its part of the Safe School Study are described in detail. The report focuses on methods, the rationale for their selection, and their implementation. It also addresses various practical problems encountered. The sample design is described in detail, as are the study instruments, data collection methods, preparation of the data base, and statistical methods used in generating the descriptive results. The purpose, summary of the methodology, results, and conclusions of four data quality studies are described. The methodology and major findings of a pilot study designed to pretest the study instruments and to evaluate alternative data collection procedures are documented in the appendixes, as are the results of a literature review.
