We Work Together to Find Potential.
Brooks, Charlotte
In this paper, English teachers are urged to assist slow learners to discover their hidden potential. The paper deals with a wide range of topics, including the importance of early language arts experiences; ideas for developing a love of literature in all students; the value of having high expectations for all students; techniques for developing writing ability in students at all levels; resources published by the National Council of Teachers of English that are useful in helping teachers recognize and release student potential; implications of the severe economic deprivation that exists among millions of families in the United States; the dangers of overemphasizing standardized tests that place students under a great deal of pressure; the desirability of humanistic education; and ways in which teachers can work to see that the potential abilities of all students are recognized and released.
