Third Party Evaluation of a Part D Exemplary Project Entitled "Experience Based Career Education."
Associated Educational Consultants, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA.
Evaluation of the Cabell County's (West Virginia) Program was based upon a list of program objectives directed toward improving student and community attitudes toward career education through a program of career exploration. Focus was on helping tenth grade students explore occupational interests and abilities in a school setting and at four different work sites. Through standardized tests, interviews, and surveys, information was collected from program staff, students enrolled in the program, educators within the school system, participating employers, parents of enrolled students, and project records. Findings were that the overall reaction to the program was generally positive. Gains in student test scores were not up to hypothesized standards. The short time period between data collection efforts could have caused some of the inconsistencies. As a result, a comprehensive follow-up of 1977-78 students was suggested. Fourteen recommendations included instituting a better system of rotating students between job sites, and providing students with more in-school time at the beginning of the year so that important peer relationships might develop. (Half of this report is comprised of the appendix which includes the original project objectives and outcomes, descriptions of the tests administered, employer and parent questionnaires, and a bibliography of EBCE "core materials.")
