A Profile Examination System for Physician Extenders and a Method for Curricular Prescription. Final Report.

The basic purposes of the Profile Examination for Physician Extenders (PEPE) project included: (1) development of a computerized test item bank from which Profile Examinations could be generated, (2) review and analysis of curricula for the allied health groups, and (3) assessment of the reliability and validity of the Profile Examinations. The product of the PEPE project is a system, not a single examination. A library of over 10,000 multiple choice test items has been developed, from which tests can be generated with computer assistance. Such examinations have been generated and field tested at Sheppard Air Force Base, and at Ferris State College, Grand Rapids, Michigan. This complete system aids in the analysis of curricular content, the generation of related examinations, and the design of individualized curricula for allied health personnel who wish to extend their role at the physician assistant level. A description of the computer programs, bibliographical references, and guidelines for writing items are appended. The content of several curricula are illustrated and classified according to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) codes: physician assistant, dietetics, medical technology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, radiologic technology, and respiratory therapy.
