The bulletin is designed to help educators understand the rationale and methods for instituting continuous evaluation of social studies teaching and learning in terms of specified objectives. Chapter one explains how evaluation in social studies is helpful to teachers, students, school officials, and parents. Evaluation includes testing as well as classroom observations, group discussions, diaries, sociograms, and interviews. An effective program must be based on clear objectives, be continuous, and be interpreted correctly to all groups involved. Chapter two explains how to evaluate the instructional process. It discusses how to clarify cognitive, affective, and psychomotor objectives, identify specific skills to be evaluated, and determine the most appropriate type of tests. Guidelines for writing short-answer items, multiple-choice items, true-false items, matching items, and essay questions are given in chapter three. Chapter four describes how to provide useful feedback after evaluation components have been completed. Two appendices list 16 references about evaluation and 26 important terms. (AV)
