The 1971-72 Evaluation of the Connecticut Program for Migrant Children.
Mosley, William; Scruggs, James A.
The program aimed to develop and implement educational activities for migrant children which would increase their achievement level in the public school classrooms and to deal with matters of self, their interaction with others, and survival. Two types of learning programs were emphasized: Multi-Purpose Resource Centers which supplemented the child's educational opportunities and coordinated the health, cultural, social and educational services to Connecticut's migrants; and the Summer Enrichment Program which added emphasis on intensively teaching the migrant child. The Centers provided an Early Childhood Program which enrolled 108 children and an Individualized Instruction Program which served 218 children. Primarily an academically oriented six weeks of intense, but high interest, study to strengthen skill levels and teach the students to be individuals, the Summer Enrichment Program provided 964 students with academic and recreation experiences, and health, hygiene, and nutrition services. To evaluate the program, the students were given the Inter-American Test of General Ability, the Inferred Self-Concept Scale, and the Children's Perceived Powerfulness Scale, and teachers were given a questionnaire which focused on their attitudes and feelings about the children, their parents, the community and the program. Test results indicated the program was effective since no pretest-posttest losses occurred. Teacher responses showed consistent positive patterns at three centers and neutral to negative patterns at two centers. (NQ)
