The manual gives vocabulary and sentence patterns which are considered basic or essential to medical personnel who work with Spanish-speaking patients. In most instances, only one way is given to express an idea or to ask a question. Sentence patterns and vocabulary that should be made active are repeated many times. The manual includes (1) hundreds of short sentences and questions in English, with Spanish translations and phoneticized Spanish; (2) word lists in English and Spanish covering clothing, baby care, diseases, foods, locations in and around the hospital, parts of the body, occupations, sickroom supplies, and toilet articles; (3) a more than 1,300-word vocabulary in English with Spanish translations of words of special usefulness to hospital personnel; (4) useful expressions and questions for hospital personnel in admissions, social service, nursing, cardiology, dentistry, general medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, surgery, x-ray, laboratory, and ambulance service; (5) sections on simplified Spanish grammar to aid the user in dealing effectively with his or her clientele during everyday hospital contacts. A 328-item selective bibliography of books, reports, and periodical articles on Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and other Caribbean Spanish-speaking peoples is included, along with an author index.
