Native American Community Involvement: A Guide to Classroom Study of Some Oklahoma Indian Tribes.
Eyster, Ira; Chisholm, Anita
The product of a Title VII ESAA grant, this guide to the study of Oklahoma American Indians has been designed and evaluated by teams of Native American adults, Indian and non-Indian students, and teachers from three Oklahoma schools selected as project sites: Okmulgee, Hartshorne, and Shawnee schools. The guide is divided into three basic sections identified by the schools and the tribes associated with each school (Creeks for the Okmulgee School; the Kickapoo, Pottawatomi, and Sac and Fox for the Shawnee School; and the Choctaws for the Hartshorne Schools). Each section presents: an introduction; background information; resource materials; suggested lesson plans; a bibliography; and an appendix. Although identified by grade level, each of the lesson plans is adaptable to other grade levels. Each lesson plan includes: objectives; vocabulary; discussion questions; and suggested activities. The background information includes early history, early day life styles, myths and legends, and biographies. It is suggested that a fourth section devoted to Indian policies and treaties could be readily adapted to specific tribal studies and/or individualized projects. Exemplary puzzles, exercises, illustrations, etc. are also included in this guide. (JC)
