A Family Day Care Primer: A Procedural Guide.
This report on a Comprehensive Community Child Care (4C) pilot project to train family day care providers describes the step-by-step procedures for setting up, operation and assessment of the program. The program was conducted primarily through home visits and group meetings, with extensive use of handout materials. Sixty voluntary participants, all welfare department certified providers, were trained in two groups, in succeeding sessions (11 and 14 weeks). Experiences of the first group resulted in some changes in planning for the second session. The report's first section describes recruitment and organization of the interdisciplinary training staff. The second section is devoted to the program itself, beginning with provider recruitment and the geographical matching of providers and trainers (20 to 2 in the first group and 40 to 3 in the second group). The weekly one-hour home visits emphasized child participation. The group meetings, eight per session, with topics chosen by providers, involved occasional outside speakers. Identification of community resources included development of a directory of providers and a community resource sheet, as well as use of outside materials and field trips, with emphasis on library use. A family day care association was formed as a mutual support network to deal with areas such as insurance, tax deductions, clothing exchange, toy safety and information on child development. The report's final section notes the need for continuity and followup between the home-visit and group-meeting components and includes descriptions of program documentation and an assessment of changes in pre- and post-program provider questionnaire responses.
