Locally Directed Evaluation: A Progress Report on Vocational/Technical Curriculum Evaluation at Oakton Community College.
Kirby, Emily B.
In developing evaluation techniques for its 28 accredited vocational and technical programs, the major goals of Oakton Community College were (1) program improvement and (2) communication of needs and findings between users and trainers. One of four Clusters containing several diverse vocational/technical curricula was selected for initial evaluation. Three tasks were then defined: to identify occupational competencies in each curriculum and determine the kinds of information needed to evaluate that area; to determine who should be asked to supply information; and to construct surveys that reflected the information sought and that met the goals of improvement in curricula and communication. The construction process involved vocational coordinators, an advisory committee, and the institutional research office. Curriculum graduates and their addresses were also identified. Expected outcomes of the evaluation process include efficiency in making external funding reports, and providing internal information on the reliability and validity of the evaluation process. Sample employer and graduate survey instruments are appended. (RT)
