Occupational Education Program Student Follow-up.
San Mateo Community Coll. District, CA.
A survey mailed to 15,000 students listed as occupational majors in fall 1972, 1974, and 1976 at the three San Mateo County Community College District colleges yielded a 13.3% response rate. Respondents were found to be representative of program completers but not of non-completers. Findings suggested: respondents were predominantly white, half resided within the district, nearly half were in business cluster programs, nearly one quarter were in health, public service and manufacturing programs; 1972 and 1974 respondents were generally employed, with most in professional/technical and clerical/secretarial occupations; 1976 respondents still in school reported full-time employment at 60% for day students, and 85% for evening students, with similar responses from 1976 graduates; about half of the 1972 and 1974 respondents reported a direct relationship between college training and subsequent employment, one third reported some or considerable difficulty in locating work in their training; all respondents evaluated occupational programs and services favorably, with counseling and job placement receiving low ratings; all respondents recommended basic skills and specific occupational techniques courses and increased career counseling.
