Presented is a general statistical description of the population of individuals with salaried faculty status at U.S. medical schools. The purpose is to provide a reference on manpower in medical education and biomedical research. Data are drawn from the Association of American Medical Colleges' Faculty Roster. The information, largely focusing on full-time faculty, is presented in five segments: (1) an overview of earned degrees, academic ranks, major academic departments, and primary specialties; (2) areas of responsibility of the faculty; (3) employment history; (4) training and credentials; and (5) special topics, including faculty characteristics by sex and ethnic group, foreign medical graduates, and newly-hired faculty.
