Report to the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education on Project Progress by Examination.
von der Lippe, Robert
A study was undertaken to examine and strengthen the examination system at Hampshire College. During the study the college was in its third and fourth years of operation. The system, known as progress by examination, is comprised of six diagnostic and evaluative meetings between students and their faculty to determine their eventual satisfactory completion of academic work for the bachelor's degree. The system is found to work well, as evidenced by: the way students move from entrance to graduation with increasing levels of skill, sophistication, and ability as documented by products of their own research, and by evaluation by college and extra-college faculty; and student progress to successful careers in graduate work and professional training. Report contents include: an overview of the examination system; activities undertaken during the study period; publications; meetings; job placement; workships; advising centers; and evaluation and consultation. A number of advising booklets and related materials are appended. (MSE)
