A NSF- and NIH-sponsored survey of a sample of 5,000 Ph.D.'s in science and engineering was undertaken in 1973 and l975 to obtain current data on their educational, employment, and career patterns. This report analyzes the employment situation by examining demographic and employment characteristics. Several employment categories are identified: unemployed and seeking employment; full-time employed in a nonscience or nonengineering position because employment in science or engineering was not available; and part-time employed in a science or engineering position, and seeking full-time employment. Individuals in these categories were studied by age, sex, field of Ph.D., year of Ph.D., primary work activity (excluding unemployed), and type of employer. (LBH)
