TESL Reporter, Vol. 10, No. 2, Winter 1977.
Pack, Alice C., Ed.
This newsletter contains five articles. The first, "Discourse Structure in Reading," by Ron Shook, suggests that reading materials for the beginning ESL (English as a second language) reader often have three defects: (1) profusion of detail as question fodder; (2) an oversimplified syntax; and (3) an artificial construction that violates the principles of civilized discourse. The college level ESL student comes to the study of English with a fully developed set of strategies for deciphering written material, both cognitive and linguistic. The second article, "The Use of Stick Figures in the TESL Classroom," by Alice Pack, shows how illustrating grammar points with simple stick figures can make teaching more effective. The third article, "Bachelor's Program in American Samoa," by John Udarbe, describes the development and implementation of a baccalaureate program in American Samoa and reactions of participants. The fourth article, "Research on Sequencing," by Jack Wigfield, discusses the application of this research to sequencing materials for adult ESL students. In the last article, "'Year of Composition' Workshop," Greg Larkin discusses the workshop held for composition teachers in September 1977 on the Brigham Young Hawaii campus. A review of Joan Morley's textbook, "Listening Dictation," is also included. (CFM)
