English Language Teaching Profile: Malta.
British Council, London (England). English-Teaching Information Centre.
This profile in outline form of the English language teaching situation in Malta discusses the role of English in Maltese society and in the educational system. The most significant changes that have taken place since 1971 include the increasing importance given to Maltese, its greater use as a national and official language, and the new emphasis on the teaching of Arabic and Italian. All these changes have directly affected the role of English. The place of English in the curricula of primary, secondary, and tertiary education is outlined, as well as its place in educational broadcasting. The status of the English teaching staff, teacher training, and instructional materials are also dealt with, as well as the role of English outside the educational system and British and American support for the teaching of English. A short bibliography of current research concludes the profile. (CLK)
