Pedagogie des Langues et Prospective: Reflexions Pour 1984 (Language Instruction and the Future: Reflections for 1984). Melanges Pedagogiques, 1971.
Chalon, Y.
This article explores the possible language teaching situation for the generation born in 1964, with a view toward preparing for the challenges that 1984 will bring. A large percentage of the French population will find a second European language indispensable. To this end, secondary education will have to become an arena of linguistic experimentation, leading to diversification and flexibility in language instruction models, reflecting local, regional, and national differences. This is expected to create a type of bilingualism, with cultural implications. The type of bilingualism envisioned is not a national, politically imposed one, but an individual bilingualism. Thus the choice of second language must be left up to the individual. However, the predominance of the English language, as well as the American culture, cannot be overlooked. In terms of political action, it is hoped that the importance of the mastery of a second language for the economic well-being of the country will be recognized and acted upon. (AM)
