St. John, Wesley V.; Young, Robert
The final report provides information on a followup study of the post-school adjustment of former (1964-1975) special education secondary students in Napa Valley, California. A review of statistics (job related information, community contacts information, school information, and personal information) is presented for the following target groups: teen mothers, learning disabled-emotionally disturbed, educable mentally retarded, trainable mentally retarded, orthopedically handicapped, visually handicapped, deaf/hard of hearing and transitional. A second section includes program improvement suggestions for each of the target group programs, a discussion of vocational career education, and a review of student reactions to school subject areas. Provided is a summary of employer reports by target groups with information on acceptable and unacceptable behavior. A section on the project design and administration covers data processing features as well as a description of the research instruments used (including student and employer questionnaires and employer report). A final section provides a commentary on the concluding statistics and a review of findings, including a higher unemployment rate among former students than the state and national averages, a lower employment rate in special education females than males, and job retention as a significant problem for those initially finding employment. Included among 15 appendixes is a career education and guidance proposal. (CL)
