The standards and commentary in this volume are part of a series designed to cover the juvenile justice system and its relationship to the rights and responsibilities of juveniles. This volume on public education is addressed to legislators, courts, lawyers, educators, parents, students, and the general public. The volume proposes standards concerning the right to education and compulsory education, the problem of consents or waivers by students and of the allocation of control of student rights between students and their parents, the general regulatory power of schools, student rights of expression, procedural rights available to students in connection with school discipline, sanctions appropriate for student misconduct, interrogation of students, and searches of students or student-related areas.
