Based on a statewide sample of teachers, subject masters, and administrators in Queensland, Australia, secondary state high schools, discussion focuses on the role of the subject master within the school system; the skills required for the position; and professional development activities. Changes relating to the administrative and curriculum functions of the role are identified, as are some collegial and bureaucratic approaches to professional development. (Author/MLF)
