O.N.E.: A Case Study in Argumentation and Negotiation.
Harral, Harriet Briscoe
The key element in negotiation is power. This case study shows how one conservative group (ONE, the Organization of the Northeast, a Chicago community group) used "radical rhetoric" to achieve functional power in negotiations for community improvements. "Radical rhetoric" employs the tactics and the strategies used by protestors and demonstrators in the late 1960s and early 1970s to effect social change. The strategy of "radical rhetoric" is to make division obvious, to limit the choices of the existing decision-making structure, and to allow the group to become an influential part of the decision-making structure.
