This report provides illustrations of practical applications of behavior modification to a variety of reading skills and is intended to be directly implemented in any classroom where reading is taught. The initial chapter is a brief orientation to behavior modification. It stresses that the trainer must answer the question of what behavior is to be learned, and this response must be defined in observable, measurable terms. The subsequent chapters deal with the application of respondent conditioning, operant conditioning, and modeling to selected reading skills. A positive-reinforcement program is presented for both academic and social behavior. The final section presents a detailed reporting system for reinforcing reading and other academic behaviors in grades one through six. A bibliography of sources that deal with behavior modification in education is included. (MAI)
