An Individualized Model for a Differentiated Secretarial Single Skills Lab. Final Report.
Fisher, Sharon Anne
To implement a single skills lab and develop or select twenty-five units for instruction in the secretarial science curriculum at Elgin Community College (Illinois), a task analysis was conducted to determine common tasks completed by area office personnel. This information was then used to select and develop instructional units for the single skills lab. All units were completed by students and evaluated for instructional effectiveness by various techniques. The following results were indicated: Most common tasks completed by office personnel included typewriting and receptionist activities; statistical and technical typing and business machines were not needed in the single skills lab; students enrolled in the single skills lab viewed it better than their typical class but not equally with their ideal class; typewriting units were selected most frequently by students; learning was educationally significant with the individualized units; and the single skills lab approach enabled stutents to tailor-make their course outlines. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the single skills lab approach will be continued, improved, and expanded as time permits. (A major portion of this document includes appended materials; three of the individual units are available as separate documents.) (Author/BM)
