Special Needs Students in Regular Home Economics Programs: 1977 Report on Minnesota Secondary In-Service Teacher Education.
Whiteford, Emma B.
Objectives of a pilot workshop for selected home economics teachers working with special needs students who were programmed into regular home economics classes were that each participant should (1) become aware of her personal teaching styles (and alternatives); (2) learn to match teaching styles with student learning styles; (3) become familiar with a variety of teaching models/techniques to promote learning for students with various types of special needs; (4) be able to use suggested criteria for evaluation of materials; (5) develop or adapt instructional materials; and (6) evaluate the content and presentation of the workshop series. Thirteen teachers participated in five two-hour sessions with emphasis on the following topics: awareness of teaching styles; techniques, ideas, and learning resources; selection of instructional resources; alternative learning methods for increased individualization and adaptation of instruction; and ways of implementing individualized instruction. The teachers judged the experience to be valuable and recommendations were that increased opportunities should be provided for teachers to enroll in workshops and that workshops should be credit-bearing. Descriptions of each of the five workshops, sample materials used, and a ten-page bibliography (including prices and availability) are appended. (BL)
