An Internship Program for the Training, Exchange, and Transition of Vocational Education and Business, Industry, Agricultural, and Government Personnel. An Advanced Pilot Study. Director's Final Report. July 1, 1971-June 30, 1972.
Larson, Milton E.
The second year of a pilot internship program for the preservice and inservice professional development of vocational educators was undertaken to (1) provide potential leadership personnel on-the-job learning experiences, (2) provide relevant educational on-the-job experiences to vocational and technical education undergraduates at Colorado State University, (3) further test the value of an exchange program between vocational and technical education and employers, and (4) expand and revise the handbook of operational guidelines for professional internship programs which was developed during the first project year. The program involved recruiting interns, arranging for suitable internship situations, and then monitoring and coordinating the interns' field experiences. A follow-up evaluation survey was done of twenty-six interns who completed the program. Five implications of the study include (1) the internship can assist an individual in job placement, (2) many valuable experiences can be obtained through an internship that are not obtainable in the classroom, and (3) prior classroom instruction is important to those who seek experiences through an internship. It was concluded that the program has established the importance of the internship for both the preservice and inservice professional development of vocational educators. (The handbook of operational guidelines and a report of the follow-up evaluation study are appended.) (EM)
