Guidelines and Cautions for Considering Criterion-Referenced Testing.
National Education Association, Washington, DC.
The opinions presented reflect those of the National Education Association Task Force on Testing: that norm referenced tests are often misused, and that problems are also associated with criterion referenced tests. A list of warnings for teachers considering the use of criterion referenced tests includes: (1) common deficiencies in testing need to be communicated both to the profession and to the public, (2) teachers should have an extensive role, from the beginning, in determining objectives, (3) the claims of criterion, objective, and domain referenced tests should be viewed with some skepticism, but with an open mind, (4) teachers should obtain information on field testing, reliability, and validity of the tests they use, (5) teachers should vigorously resist the misuse of all kinds of tests, and (6) teachers should not allow themselves to be evaluated according to the results of any test.
