Assessment of Altruism in Children. Final Report.
Payne, Frank D.
Six contrived situational measures of altruism--prosocial behavior intended to benefit other persons--were developed and administered to 52 fourth- through sixth-grade boys and girls of Caucasian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Hawaiian heritage. A peer nomination device and a teacher rating form dealing with altruistic behavior were developed and completed by the children and by two teachers familiar with the children. The findings indicated that the situational measures held promise for assessment of altruistic tendencies in children. Performance across situations generally exhibited low positive association, although two essentially uncorrelated clusters also emerged. One cluster involved anonymous donation of goods or work to physically absent strangers, while the other involved giving goods to physically present classmates. Inter-correlations between ratings and overt performance varied with the level at which each was scored. When items were combined into global indices, significant relationships were nonexistent; when principal component factors were formal, higher correlations were obtained. Correlations between individual situational performances and selected demographic and personality variables (sex, grade, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, socially desirable presentation, academic achievement) were highly variable, although statistically significant relationships were obtained for a summary situational index. The measures are appended. (Author/DSE)
