Consortium on Methodology for Aggregating Data in Educational Research. Final Report.
Vasquez Associates Ltd., Milwaukee, WI.
The Consortium on Methodology for Aggregating Data in Educational Research was designed as a collaborative effort by research methodologists from economics, education and sociology. Consortium goals were to delineate what was known about the problems associated with the analysis of data from the multiple levels (pupil, teacher/classroom, school) of educational systems, to develop analytical theory to account for these problems, and to organize the findings into guidelines for research and evaluation efforts using aggregated data. Analysis problems that were the focus of the project can be characterized in the following manner: (1) Change in units of analysis/grouping of observations/ecological inference/cross-level inference/aggregation effects, e.g., if one knows the desired level of inference, what complications arise from analyzing data at different levels? (2) Contextual/compositional/structural/"school" effects, e.g., is it important to consider the effects of more than one level of units on the variable of interest? (3) Decisions regarding appropriate units of analysis, e.g., are there general concerns and guidelines for determining the appropriate units of analysis in a given research and evaluation context? Listings of all technical reports, symposia, and conference presentations written, presented or organized under the auspices of the Consortium on Methodology for Aggregating Data in Educational Research are included.
