The Overhead Projector and the Teacher of English in Brazil.
Funck, Elvio Antonio
This paper presents arguments for the consistent use of modern audiovisual aids in English classes, not as a complementary device, but as a fundamental aid. The intention of the thesis is to: (1) show that the overhead projector can be used to help students develop the four language skills; and (2) encourage English teachers, particularly in Brazil, to use the overhead projector as a normal teaching instrument. For the sake of unity, the "English 900" textbook series is referred to in the paper, as this series is widely and successfully used in Brazil. Advantages to using the overhead projector include: (1) its versatility, (2) its lasting use, (3) the control it gives the teacher, and (4) the energy and work that it saves the teacher. Examples are given of ways in which the overhead projector can be used in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. One novel use is that of comic strips and plastic or cellophane wrappings, both of which can be used to illustrate structural and cultural points. (AM)
