A New Generation of Leadership: Education for the Gifted and Talented.
Johnson, Barbara, Ed.
The handbook provides a compilation of presentations and papers on the development of potential leadership in the education of gifted and talented students. Chapter I, "Certain Criteria Lead Toward Leadership" (P. Judkins), discusses identification of potential leadership characteristics. In Chapter II, "Leading Leaders" (J. Olivero), leadership training in the schools is addressed, including leadership program options and teacher qualifications. The importance of responsible youth participation roles within community institutions is noted in Chapter III, "More Than A Student-Developing Leadership Potential in Youth" (M. Ruiz). Chapter IV, "Leadership, The Gifted Population and the Center for Creative Leadership--A Network System" (J. Cavedon), reports on research and training workshops conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. The use of business and industry as resources for leadership training and the "school within a school" project are considered in Chapter V, "Gifted and Talented Students Learn Leadership from Business" (D. Treloar). Chapter VI, "Creative Leadership" (S. Parnes), describes leadership training techniques used in a program for teachers and students at Buffalo State University College, Buffalo, New York. Chapter VII provides a survey of literature on leadership by a team from the Los Angeles Unified School District, covering such topics as definition of leadership, leadership theories, measurement of leadership traits, and principles of leadership programs.
