Tutoring is Caring: You Can Help Someone to Read.
Wolf, Aline D.
This manual for elementary school reading tutors emphasizes that a positive attitude--caring about the student--is the most important ingredient in a successful tutoring relationship. After an introductory section on tutoring, the manual presents these basic steps for teaching reading: sounding out consonants and short vowels, word building, reading simple words, new consonant sounds, the long vowels, other vowel sounds, and more work with consonants. A third section of the manual provides the following suggestions for specific situations: dealing with learning disabilities, games for learning, activities for interest and motivation, developing expression and comprehension, and helping a child with penmanship. There are also short sections on ideas for parents of school-age children, a word of encouragement to the manual's readers, books recommended for tutors, and sources for supplies. (RL)
