The study, conducted by Temple University's Institute for Survey Research during September - December of 1976, consisted of interviews of more than 2,200 children aged 7 to 11, and more than 1,700 of their parents. The interviews, of a scientifically selected sample, were structured to determine the general environment in which children live--their family lives, their friends, schools, health and neighborhood activities--and to learn their perceptions, feelings, attitudes and values. In an interview lasting more than one-half hour, the youngsters were asked to report their feelings about different areas of their lives in a variety of ways. They were asked to pick one of five sentences to tell how they feel about various work and play activities. They were asked how often they feel bored, lonely, worry about things, get scared, and feel angry, and whether specific situations made them feel worried, ashamed, afraid, and angry. They were given a set of five faces ranging from very happy to very sad and asked "Which face shows how you feel about: yourself? your school work? your family?..." The study describes some of the perceptions, attitudes, and feelings they reported. (Author)
