Second Year Evaluation of Career Education Project.
Meriden Public Schools, CT.
A two-year career education exemplary project conducted in the middle schools and grade nine in Meridian, Connecticut, was evaluated. Objectives of the program had included providing hands-on experience in various job clusters to the students, expanding the work of guidance counselors in career education, providing teacher inservice training, and expanding the program upward to grades 10-12 and downward to the elementary schools. An evaluator conferred with counselors, administrators, principals, teachers and others, and made a three-day on-site visit of the schools, administrative offices, and audio visual installations involved. Findings revealed that the project was viewed as very successful and that it received strong community support, but due to stringent economic cutbacks in the school system, career education was not included in the 1975-76 school budget. In response to the severely trimmed budget, recommendations were made regarding establishment of a career education steering committee composed of guidance counselors to carry on as much as possible the work already begun, appointment of a special study committee conversant with vocational needs of the city to determine necessary steps to make the two high schools fully comprehensive, and investigation of further possibilities for federal and state funding.
