The Reading Teaching Technician. Occupational Education Research Project. Final Report.
Greensboro City Public Schools, NC.
A project designed to train paraprofessional personnel (technicians) who could materially assist elementary classroom teachers in working with atypical readers is reported in two separate sections. The first section, titled "Highlights of the Reading Teaching Technician Project," describes the background, operation, dissemination, and projections of the project, which involved three institutions in a cooperative arrangement: a university that provided graduate students to train the reading technicians, a two-year technical institute that gave technicians diploma credit for their work, and the local educational agency in whose elementary reading program the technicians worked. A listing of course descriptions and requirements for both the two-year and one-year reading teaching technician program are appended to this section. The second section, titled "Project Evaluation," contains the unedited report of the project's external evaluator and a discussion of the extent to which the project met its predetermined objectives: to train the technicians, to elevate the children's reading skills, to prepare doctoral-level university students to deal with reading problems of public school administrators, and to generate a disseminatable model for such activity. The evaluator's conclusion is that an adequate training program was developed between the university and the institute with the children receiving substantial help in reading and the graduate students having extensive leadership and teaching opportunities.
