Based on the annual reports filed by private employers indicating the sex and racial/ethnic make-up of their employees, employment statistics were gathered by sex for each of nine major occupational categories and for each of four minority groups: Blacks, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and American Indians. In 1975, individual reports were filed for some 150,000 establishments employing 29.9 million persons. These employees included 4.9 million minority group members and 11.1 million women. Blacks were 10.7% of private industry's workers; Hispanics, 4.3%; Asian Americans, 0.9%; and American Indians, 0.3%. Relatively large proportions of the Asian American and Black employees were women. In every one of the white-collar occupations, Blacks and Hispanics were underrepresented. Asian Americans were well-represented in many of the white-collar occupations, particularly as professionals and technicians, but underrepresented in managerial participation, sales positions, and in every blue-collar occupational category. American Indians exceeded their total participation rate in each of the blue-collar and service job categories. Women constituted 37.1% of all private sector employees reported, but were underrepresented in the higher earning white- and blue-collar jobs.
