The Measurement of Attitudes of Chicano Freshmen Who Are Preparing for a Criminal Justice Career.
Payton, George T.
An eight-year study of the academic performance and dropout rate of Chicano students majoring in law enforcement was conducted at San Jose City College. The study revealed that during the first semester Chicano students had a higher dropout rate and lower grades than the class as a whole. However, by the second year, the dropout rate was not significantly different from the total class average; and during the last three years of study, the Chicano students were getting a high percentage of the top grades in the class. A second phase of the study sought to include Chicano students from 18 other community colleges in California. A questionnaire was administered to all law enforcement majors in these colleges to measure personal attitudes and expectations about a career in law enforcement. Verbal comments and responses contributed by the students after the questionnaire were also recorded. Some of the basic findings were that the percentage of Chicano students majoring in law enforcement is higher than the statewide percentage of Chicano citizens and that after the first semester, the Chicano student does not differ academically from the non-Chicano student. A chi square formulation was used to analyze the responses for significant differences, and several differences were identified. The survey instrument and statistical tables are appended. (BM)
