The booklet presents 18 articles reflecting varying views of multicultural education. Although the definitions of multicultural education differ, and although the viewpoints and backgrounds of the authors are diverse, the articles unanimously emphasize the awareness of cultural pluralism and respect for all people. Intended as a resource for curriculum developers, teachers, administrators, and researchers, the document begins with a statement by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development which interprets multicultural education as a continuous, systematic process that will broaden and diversify as it develops. The statement stresses the right of different cultures to exist and the importance of a multicultural foundation to the educational experience of all students. Other articles focus on multiethnic encounters as part of the unstudied curriculum; legal redress to denial of rights and justice to minority students; anthropological aids to understanding the culture of the school; ways of combatting sexism and ethnic stereotypes in school and society; the international dimensions of cultural pluralism; and the need for research which will be of help in developing education that is multicultural. Three articles discuss the specifics of curriculum design and multicultural materials and instructional materials. The last four articles provide the classroom teacher with ideas for activities they might use to illustrate the concept of multiculturalism as part of their classroom curriculum. (Author/DB)
