The Virginia Community College System: An Examination After Its First Decade.
Armistead, Blenda Woodard
This study examines the status of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) after its first ten years of operation. In addition, it reviews the history and development of VCCS, explores its successes and failures as measured against the original expectations of 36 state governmental and educational leaders, and reports the aspirations for the system's future held by those same individuals. It reviews program offerings; facilities growth and utilization; enrollment trends; graduation awards by degree type and curriculum (1975-76); changes in the utilization of part-time faculty; faculty growth and characteristics; and appropriations and expenditures. Also presented are enrollment projections to 1987-88. As viewed by the 36 persons interviewed, VCCS had exceeded its initial goals; their recommendations for improving the system are summarized. (DC)
