Research in the field of "information-seeking behavior of scientists and engineers" has been done on the behavior and preferences of researchers with respect to technical literature, computer-based information systems, and other scientific and technical information (STI) systems and services. The objectives of this project are: (1) to review the state-of-the-art in various aspects of the field and to develop researchable questions, and (2) to design (a) some key experiments to be carried out in a large number of organizations and (b) some "administrative experiments" to be carried out by individual managers of research and development (R&D) or STI to solve specific STI problems. Other major sections of the report include: (1) a literature analysis, (2) a survey of STI users, (3) a survey of on-going and proposed experiments by STI users, (4) the development of a propositional inventory, and (5) the exploration of the feasibility of a framework for analysis of the STI process.
