Student Expenses at Postsecondary Institutions, 1977-78.
Suchar, Elizabeth W.; And Others
A listing is given of student expenses at approximately 2,750 postsecondary institutions across the United States as reported by the institutions. Eighteen tables give data indicating average expenses for commuting students, self-supporting students, and resident students, both those living in campus housing and those in private housing. The tables also provide data showing how postsecondary educational expenses are changing and how expenses vary by College Board region. Some of the findings are: (1) The overall increase in total expenses for resident students at all types of institutions from 1976-77 to 1977-78 averages about 4 percent; (2) The difference in total expenses for resident and commuter students is approximately $500; (3) The difference in the tuition and fees between private and public institutions is $l,423 for two-year institutions and $l,855 for four-year institutions; (4) Total expenses minus tuition and fees do not vary substantially by institutional type and control.
