As a result of the difficulty in obtaining accurate information on graduate enrollments, and particularly trends in enrollments, the GRE Board and the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) began five years ago to conduct an annual series of enrollment surveys. Questionnaires for part 2 of the 1976-77 survey were distributed in early 1977, requesting information on enrollment as of mid-October of 1975 and 1976. Surveys were sent to 354 members of CGS, with a response rate of 85 percent. Data contained in the report include: total enrollment for institutional-size categories by institutional type; total enrollment by discipline area, giving percent change from 1975 to 1976; first-time graduate school enrollment, by discipline area, giving percent change over the year; total enrollment by sex; percent change in enrollment by ethnic group; percent change in graduate teaching assistants on appointment, by discipline area; percent change in fellowships or traineeships by discipline area; percent change in doctorates awarded by discipline area; and full- and part-time first-time enrollment by degree. Many figures are categorized by public or private control of the institution. (MSE)
