Foreign Study Opportunities Beckon U Students Abroad. Comment, Number 26.
Peterson, Nancy A.
Many University of Minnesota students enrich their campus-based academic programs with study and travel overseas. They may participate in a variety of formal study-abroad programs sponsored by the university or available to students through cooperative arrangements with other institutions; or, as growing numbers of students are doing, they may take part in informal, short-term programs or go abroad on their own to pursue independent study. Formal programs take several forms: (1) those offered by the university through individual departments, and sometimes in conjunction with extension courses or summer sessions; (2) reciprocal exchanges with foreign institutions; (3) the Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN), a statewide program; and the pilot Foreign Studies Program of University College, integrating foreign study and coursework into an individualized baccalaureate degree program or into a foreign studies specialization in another discipline. University faculty members can be involved in these programs, either on campus or abroad. (Author/MSE)
