I Dreamed a College.
Sammartino, Peter
While the story is autobiographical, it is also the story of Fairleigh Dickinson University, thought to be one of the last private universities to be established in the United States. Its early development was inspired by the philosophy of New College, Teachers College, Columbia University. Fairleigh Dickinson's establishment represented an intermediate development in higher education between the private colleges that were mainly church related and the upsurge of public higher education. The history points out the financial, mechanical, and administrative problems of college development, and focuses on the desire to build a kind of education that is culturally valuable, professionally sound, and community-service oriented.
