Mental Health and Family Life Education. Individualized Health Incentive Program Modules for Physically Disabled Students for Grades Kindergarten Through Twelve. Teacher's Edition.
Reggio, Kathryn D.
Presented is a module in mental health and family life education adapted from the New York State Health Education curriculum to meet the needs of physically disabled students in grades K-12. It is explained that physically disabled students need to understand regular health habits in addition to special health concerns relating to their disability. An introductory section contains information on symptoms, hospitalization and treatment, and medical recommendations for nine types of disability, including muscular dystrophy and hemophilia. The bulk of the document is composed of listings of concepts, student activities, student self evaluations, and background information for teachers in four grade levels (sample topics in parentheses): grades K-3 (understanding the life cycle and human growth and development); grades 4-6 (the family as a social unit, personality, and growing toward the teen years); grades 7-9 (handling frustrations and solving problems, realistic goal planning, and dimensions of maturity); and grades 10-12 (learning how other disabled people succeeded, problems of sexual and reproductive ability, and experiences in child care).
