This curriculum guide for public fire educators was developed to assist them in planning and implementing fire educational programs for older Americans (over 65), adults, youthful firesetters, and children. This booklet's content is in four parts: (1) Over 65 and Fire Safety discusses five broad questions which provide the framework for planning programs: Who are the older Americans? What do older people need to know about fire? What does the fire education planner need to understand about older people? What can be done to interest older people in fire safety? and What existing means of communicating can be used to reach the older people?; (2) Adults Are the Key covers three basic principles for communicating fire safety to adults: Tell them the facts about fire hazards; appeal to their basic concerns; and be specific about hazards and appropriate behavior; (3) Youthful Firesetting Behavior discusses how one might spot a potential firesetter, makes distinctions as to the severity of different acts of firesetting, provides suggestions for methods of treatment, and presents eight common myths about firesetters; and (4) Growing Up Carefully takes a developmental approach to fire education for children at different stages of their growth and includes specific program ideas for each age group.
