Classroom Guidance: An Introductory Approach to Humanistic Education.
Smaby, Marlowe H.; And Others
The developmental guidance experiences (DGEs) presented in this document are intended for the elementary and secondary levels. They are structured for use with peer groups in personal and open discussion about both sides of a moral or ethical issue related to a developmental task, and to help students become more aware of their feelings and practice expressing them. The DGEs also emphasize positive growth experiences which foster human dignity and worth in a manner consistent with a humanistic viewpoint. The introduction contains discussion of (1) 9 developmental tasks of middle childhood (ages 6-12), such as learning physical skills necessary for ordinary games, learning to get along with age mates, learning an appropriate sex role, developing emotional freedom; (2) 10 developmental tasks of the adolescent, such as achieving new and more mature relations with age mates of both sexes, selecting and preparing for an occupation, desiring and achieving socially responsible behavior; and (3) suggestions for starting the use of DGEs in the classroom with the help of the teacher, and benefits of using the DGEs. The 9 elementary DGEs and 16 high school DGEs included were developed and field tested by 30 teachers and counselors. Each DGE is structured under the following headings: Developmental tasks, purpose, level, materials, suggested procedures, questions, comments, references, followup, and evaluation. Materials used in each DGE are included. (TA)
